-Phanerochaete chrysosporium is the model white rot fungus because of its unique ability to degrade the lignin. P. chrysosporium secrets extracellular enzymes such as lignin peroxidase and manganese peroxidase to break the complex three dimensional structure of lignin. Because the extracellular enzymes are non-specific, it is possible to apply bioremediation of pollutants as well as the biodegradation of polymer.
